Biofeed originated back in 1993 from a conversation between Greg Crowe and his former farm neighbour, Kathie Henderson, who was looking for a BioGro NZ Certified product to use on her organic farm as well as her export flowers operation. She noticed a big pile of compost that had recently been extracted from our wintering shed which had housed cattle, sheep, horses and deer. She suggested we apply for BioGro NZ Certification, and she helped us through the steps of achieving this. So Greg Crowe founded The Biofeed Company in 1994, and was granted BioGro NZ Certification that same year. Biofeed Organic Plant Food/Compost Tea has been BioGro NZ Certified ever since.

Over the years our property at Otapiri, Southland, housed animals through the cold winter months indoors and the bedding was removed and hot composted to the stringent requirements of BioGro NZ. When the composting process is complete and all biological activity of enzymes and micro-organisms have developed, the compost is liquefied and packaged for the retail markets. In 2008, the farm at Otapiri was sold to the dairy industry, and the Biofeed operation was relocated to a smaller property at Lady Barkly, just 4km north of Winton.

Initially, Biofeed was given away for customers to try and report back with any success stories. Very soon Biofeed gathered a growing following in Southland and further afield. It was offered to The Warehouse and they happily put it on the shelf in all their stores and it is still there. This market allows customers right throughout New Zealand the option of purchasing Biofeed from their local The Warehouse store. Biofeed is also located in some Pak’N Save and New World supermarkets as well as at Mitre10 Winton, Mitre10 Invercargill, Palmers Garden World Stores, Taste Nature in Dunedin, CommonSense shops in Wellington area and many other shops around New Zealand.

The Biofeed Company strives within the seasonal rhythm of nature to bring you a high quality nutritionally balanced certified organic compost tea. Organic compost tea, Biofeed is absorbed immediately on application, and is proven to stimulate natural bioactivity in the soil. It’s natural enzymes and nutrients work in supporting the plants immune system against pests and diseases, as well as producing quality organic vegetables– with old fashioned flavours, ands strong healthy flowering plants.

In 1998, organic fertiliser alternative, Biofeed, won the Southland Regional Environmental Award in it’s category. An award that is in part sponsored by the New Zealand Department of Conversation and Carter Holt Harvey Ltd.
